  • Hi
i was recently in amsterdam where i visited two really busy.bustling markets.
i thought to myself, why can’t Sur St be like this?
one was a street market about twice the lenghth of SS.
the traders seemed to have a shop building and then the pavement and then on the road was their market stall displaying their wares. you went in to the building to see more of the assortment or even for service.
the other market is set up around a pedestrianised square and i though the exchange/matthews yard could be similar.

I believe a few leaves from the dutch book of doing things could help. they do have avery relaxed way about them.

The markets seem to have grown ‘organically’ but when you look at them it’s clear there is an infrastructure and intentional design to them.

there is a lot of repetition amongst stalls but they are spread so that you only become aware of that after a few visits.

I also think that St Georges Walk could be part of a ‘flow’ down to the market if thought through properly.

Get me on a committee please as i care about my home town

I am just dropping a note to suggest that I have some good ideas for the town centre redevelopment and I am starting to train as a Community Leader in Merton. I gather ideas from travels in UK and abroad where active communities bring a lot of charm to the area. I have lived in South Croydon until recently so I have good local knowledge and made good contacts especially in restaurant businesses and community groups. I am moving to Croydon permanently soon so would love the chance to be a part of the army that brings change to my area. As a first idea I would like to suggest having a proper farmer’s market once weekly or bi-weekly like in Sutton or Wallington where local vegetables, eggs, cheese, honey, chutneys and meat are sold alongside the usual market produce. That will be saving lot of us time travelling elsewhere for farm goods. Please contact me if you would like to hear more ideas or would like me to take part in an initiative.
